Frequently Asked Questions
1. What exactly are hair extensions?
This is adding hair to your own hair by means of fusion (strand by strand), weaving, tape-ins, braiding, bonding, clips and more. There are many variations to all of these techniques and many stylists call these by different names.
2. Will hair extensions damage my hair?
As long as the hair extensions are applied properly and you take the proper care of them there should be no damage. A lot of this depends on you. If you are a very restless sleeper you can damage your hair because the constant rubbing on a pillow can cause your hair to be pulled out. It is best to sleep with your hair in a braid or pony tail to avoid this. You need to be gentle with your hair and cannot rip a brush or comb through it. Extensions are not hard to take care of, you just have to be aware of them so you don’t catch them with a comb or your fingers.
Here are some steps to avoid unnecessary damage:
- NEVER go to bed with wet hair.
- Wear a ponytail or braid to bed.
- Hold your hair at the roots or base when combing. This will keep tension off of your own hair.
- For bonded hair or micro-rings, dry your bonds on medium heat after washing and let the rest air dry.
3. Can hair extensions be cut?
Absolutely! Hair extensions can be cut and styled in any way that you want. With that said, cutting hair extensions is no easier than cutting natural hair and it is advised that you have a professional do it.
4. How do I wash my hair extensions?
Wash the hair in one direction from top to bottom and avoid washing your hair upside down in the sink. Use shampoos and conditioners that are for dry hair to add moisture and proteins. Remember, when brushing your hair, start from the bottom and work your way up while holding near your roots to keep it from shedding or stretching.
5. Can I color my hair extensions?
You can do anything with human hair extensions that you can do to your natural hair. This includes coloring, cutting, heat styling and chemical processing. Human hair extensions are often dyed to get an exact match to natural hair color.

Yes, you can go swimming in a pool, hot tub or the ocean. Make sure to wash your hair as soon as you get out and to use spray in conditioner before and after swimming.
8. What are better, straight or wavy hair extensions?
It depends on what you do with your hair. If it is typically straight then keep it that way. If you like to change it we recommend wavy as it can be worn straight or curled.
9. If my hair is damaged from chemicals; can I have hair extensions put in?
Yes, but avoid applying extensions over freshly processed hair for at least one week. Try to use as little heat as possible when styling your extensions. For example, try air drying your hair to 90% before finishing with heat and always use a heat protector spray. Another option for very damaged hair is to use clip-in extensions as this method does not put much strain on your natural hair.
10. How long can I leave my hair extensions in?
This depends on the type of extensions you choose, how fast your hair grows and how gentle you are with your hair. Typically, weft hair needs to be tightened every 6-8 weeks, Micro-rings need to be lifted every 8-10 weeks and Tape-Ins need to be re-applied every 6-8 weeks. If you purchase high quality hair such as 100% Remy Human Hair or Virgin unprocessed hair then you can reuse your extensions for over one year.
